Thursdays are a great day in the office for a couple of reasons: 1. It's a chance for us to play catch up for the week & get stuff done we've been putting off from Monday-Wednesday. The guys are all off on Thursday; this isn't to say we don't like working with them because we absolutely do, but it is nice to have a day where we can get caught up! 2. We celebrate Disney Thursdays. You may have seen the newest series on Derry's blog with this very title. Since Megan Rendall came to work here at NMC, a new tradition started as part of our Thursday where just her & I are in the office. She's a Disney fanatic, and as a result, each Thursday we take time to crank up Disney music on Pandora!
Thursdays have also proved to be an "interesting" day for our student workers. For the past two years, Katie "Katia" Lengacher was our student worker. I say "was" only because she graduated, not because we did anything to her that made her leave (we would never do that)! Thursdays for Katia became known simply as "Office Thursdays" started by the one and only Janelle Prenkert, in which Katia would have to perform a special task before beginning her regular work. Most often, these tasks involved singing songs in the most random places (i.e. the girls bathroom standing on the toilet, sing while standing on her head, perform on the Fieldhouse stage with motions, etc, etc.). There was however the occasional special task that was, well, let's stay a bit more involved. Rather than go into detail on that, you can just go here and check out this video!
Now that Katia has graduated and moved on to Hope College in Michigan, we have a new student worker, who has been more than nervous about what we might make her do (though I can't imagine why)! Katherine "Kate" Berkey has now been working here at the church for several weeks and so far Thursdays have been just like any other day, with the exception of blaring Disney songs. But...no more!
Let me now introduce to you what will be known to Kate as "Minute to Win It Thursdays Office Edition." This idea is credited entirely to the most fantastic Janelle Prenkert (thanks for the suggestion)! Each week, Kate will have 60 seconds to complete a task based off the NBC show "Minute to Win It". She gets one shot and one shot only to pass. Any failed games may be used again at any point throughout the year.
So, what's her prize if she completes the task? Well, we're making a good old fashioned sticker chart (mainly because we're still trying to come up with prizes) but once she reaches a certain number of stickers, she'll have her choice of prizes! Yep...you heard it hear...a sticker chart!
Today was the launch of this fantastic new Thursday ritual where Kate was up against quite the challenge. Check out the link for the blueprint for ON THE HOOK.
Kate's results: Level 1, FAILED
It's a lot harder than you may think, and with no prior practice or knowledge of this particular game, Kate did...well...yeah, she didn't hook a single key! But not to worry, she's guaranteed to see that game again sometime in the future. And at the very least...it was very entertaining! Better practice up, Kate!
Be sure to tune in next week for the results of Kate's second challenge on "Minute to Win It Thursdays Office Edition!" (said in loud booming voice)
